5.2 Importance of Justice

Why justice matters — not as decoration but as the legal system's load-bearing wall. Learn five arguments, each with its consequence: Legitimacy and obedience: a system perceived as just is obeyed voluntarily; a system perceived as unjust must buy obedience with force — and force is expensive and, in the end, insufficient. Justice is the difference between authority and mere power (the natural-law school's standing point — Unit 2.1). Social peace and stability: injustice accumulates like debt; history's upheavals — revolutions, insurgencies, constitutional refoundings — are settling the unpaid bills of injustice.
