7.4 Status of Adopted Person

Full filiation: the adopted child becomes the adoptive parents' child for all purposes — succession both ways (the child inherits the adoptive family; the parents inherit the child), the name, the citizenship, the maintenance and parental-authority incidents (Units 5–6); Severance from the birth family: the legal ties to the birth parents end — the succession- and-maintenance consequences with defined exceptions (residual information-and-identity interests preserved); Prohibited degrees established: the adoptive relations count for the marriage prohibitions (Unit 2, § 2.3); The equality command: no discrimination between the adopted and the biological child — in succession (Unit 9's equal shares), in status, in treatment; the child's rights protected whatever the adults' arrangements.
