3.2 Purpose and Principles of the United Nations

Purposes (Article 1 — the four): (1) international peace and security (collective prevention and removal of threats; suppression of aggression); (2) friendly relations among nations (self- determination's development on the equal-rights basis); (3) international cooperation (economic, social, cultural, humanitarian problems; human rights and fundamental freedoms without discrimination); (4) the harmonizing centre — the nations' actions aligned toward these common ends. Principles (Article 2 — the seven): (1) sovereign equality of members; (2) good-faith fulfilment of Charter obligations; (3) peaceful settlement of disputes; (4) non- use of force against territorial integrity or political independence; (5) assistance to the UN and non-assistance to states the UN acts against; (6) non-intervention in matters within domestic jurisdiction (Article 2(7) — with the Chapter VII enforcement exception); (7) non-members' cooperation in peace's interest (Article 2(6)). The pair is the Charter's constitutional core — every organ's interpretive compass.
