3 The skeleton of a deductive argument

Major premise — the rule of law, taken from a statute, a precedent or a principle. Minor premise — the facts of the case, established by evidence. Conclusion — the legal consequence. A judgment is usually this structure written in prose. Reading a judgment with the three parts marked is the fastest way to see whether it holds.
