Legal research is the process of identifying, locating and retrieving the law, and of investigating legal problems systematically in order to discover, verify, analyse or improve the law. Conceptually it covers two distinct operations: 1. Finding the law on a point (research in law) — e.g., "What is the limitation period for a defamation suit?" This is the daily research of practitioners. 2. Research about law as an institution — studying how law is made, applied and experienced, its gaps and reforms — the research of scholars and law reformers. Waters' classic definition of legal research (in S. N. Jain, Legal Research and Methodology, 1975) distinguishes purposes which are treated below (2.1.8).
