Legal education is not merely the study of statutes; it is education for a profession and for society. Its objectives operate at three levels: A. Knowledge (cognitive) objectives 1. Mastery of the substantive law — constitutional, civil, criminal, commercial, international; 2. Command of legal method — research, reasoning, interpretation (Units 1–2 of this course); 3. Understanding of law's purposes — justice, order, welfare (Unit 3); 4. Knowledge of the legal system — institutions, procedure, profession (Units 4–5). B. Skill (professional) objectives 1. Drafting — pleadings, deeds, contracts, legislation; 2. Advocacy — examination of witnesses, legal argument, negotiation; 3. Problem-solving — applying law to facts (IRAC); 4. Legal research and legal writing; 5. Client counselling and interview techniques. C. Value (ethical-social) objectives — the TU curriculum itself states them: • to instil competence and integrity; • to inculcate a sense of responsibility toward society, the nation and the world, and respect for human life; • to develop a base of legal excellence with international and indigenous understanding; • to develop a culture of research; and • to produce professionals for legal practice, research, judicial and government service, and consultancy for public and private institutions.
