4 Appreciation and criticism

Appreciation explains how the poem achieves its effect; criticism judges whether it does so honestly and how it stands in its tradition. The first is description, the second is evaluation. A good answer does both and keeps them apart: this imagery, this rhythm, this turn — and then therefore this effect, and this is what it is worth.
