4.1 Court Advocacy

Definition: the art of persuading a court — presenting facts, law and policy so the tribunal finds for your client. Advocacy is argument (Units 1–3) performed aloud, under rules, against opposition.The anatomy of a trial performance (learn the sequence):1. The opening — your theory of the case in one clear narrative: what this case is about, what the evidence will show, what you will ask the court to hold. No argument yet — a map the court can follow.2. Examination-in-chief — your witness tells the story (open, non-leading questions: who, what, when, where, how); build the narrative link by link.3. Cross-examination — the advocate's examination (leading questions: answers "yes"/"no" — you testify through your questions); goals: impeach credibility, extract concessions, control the witness.
