• By scope: special (one transaction), general (a class of business), universal (all the principal's affairs). • By function (mercantile agents): the factor (entrusted goods to sell in his own name, possession-based); the broker (negotiates, no possession, earns commission on the deal); the del credere agent (extra commission to guarantee the buyer's payment — the agent-surety hybrid); the auctioneer (sells on the principal's account, authority for the sale and receipt); the commission agent (the subcontinent's staple — buying/selling on commission). • Modern Nepali practice: insurance agents, travel agents, real-estate brokers, courier/ franchise operators, the dalal of the market — agency in everything but the name; the lawyer– client relation (the wakalatnama's authority — the vakil's brief) is a professional agency.
