2 B. The great kings (learn this sequence)

1. Manadeva I (c. 464–505 AD) — the founder of the historical line. His Changu Narayanpillar inscription (Licchavi samvat 386 = c. 464/5 AD) is Nepal's earliest dated royal record — a victory eulogy and pious donation. The inscription relates that the queen-mother's dignity was upheld (the episode of Rajyavati), and that Manadeva — devoted to Vishnu — granted and endowed. He struck the Mananka coinage; extended his authority east and west of the Valley; built and endowed temples (Changu Narayan tradition) and public works. He is the first king ofNepal we can genuinely date.2. Shivadeva I (c. 590–605) and Amshuvarma (c. 605–621) — the diarchy and the greatminister-king. Inscriptions show Amshuvarma first as a powerful mahasamanta (great feudatory) ruling alongside, and effectively for, King Shivadeva I — then reigning in his own name with full royal titles while preserving the fiction of Licchavi legitimacy. Achievements:1. Kailashkut Bhavan — the magnificent palace described in the Chinese account as the seat of audiences;2. Diplomacy — the marriage (per Tibetan and Nepali tradition) of his daughter Brikuti to the Tibetan emperor Srongtsen Gampo, knitting Nepal into the Tibet-China-Buddhism axis; Nepali artisans' influence on Tibetan architecture;3.
