Definition:social change is any significant alteration over time in social structures, institutions, culture (norms and values) and the relationships among them — in how society is organised and what its members hold dear.Distinguish (exam short-questions):• Evolution vs revolution — gradual, cumulative change vs abrupt, structural rupture (Nepal: the spread of schooling vs 1951/1990/2006/2008).• Planned vs unplanned — deliberate policy intervention vs the drift of technology, contact and fashion.• Change in structure vs change within structure — replacing caste hierarchy with a rights- based order (structural) vs new marriage fashions (intra-structural).Importance: (i) change is the normal, not the exceptional, condition of society — a sociology that cannot explain change explains nothing; (ii) the state (and the lawyer's profession) exists largely to steer it — law is society's change-instrument; (iii) Nepal is a world case-study of compressed change — a society that moved from Rana autocracy to federal republic, from bullock tracks to flight corridors, within a single lifetime.
