What is glocalization?

(Three "-tions" — a ladder of culture contact, from learning one's own culture to being absorbedinto another's.)1. Enculturation — the transmission of one's own culture to the next generation: learning language, norms, roles, ritual (anthropology's term for what Sociology Unit 4 called socialization — same process, anthropological accent on culture-learning, often without formal teaching: imitation, participation, correction).2. Acculturation — culture change in both parties through sustained, first-hand contact (the Redfield-Linton-Herskovits definition's core): borrowing, adaptation, and reaction — its outcomes ranging from assimilation (below) to integration (both maintained), fusion/syncretism (a new blend), to deculturation/rejection (loss without replacement; nativistic revival — the cargo-cult pattern). Nepal's history is acculturation's gallery: Sanskritisation (4.2), the Tibetan-Hindu blend of the Valley, the hill-tarai interchange, and today's Gulf-return hybridity.3. Assimilation — the complete absorption of one group into another: language, identity, marriage — the endpoint (sometimes chosen, often forced: the residential-school histories of indigenous children as the world's cautionary chapter). Contrast: the melting pot (assimilation's ideology — one new blend) vs the salad bowl / mosaic (integration without loss — multiculturalism's model).
