9.3 Participant Observation

Definition: the signature method — participating in the life of the community whilesystematically observing it: eating the meals, joining the harvest, sitting in the kul? (the kul is a lineage — use: sitting in the mourning, the wedding, the user-group meeting) — while maintaining the researcher's double consciousness (belonging and watching). The participation gradient(the exam's neat point): complete observer (watching only — the bus-stop study) → observer- as-participant → participant-as-observer → complete participant (fully inside — the covert extreme's ethics problem). The workable middle: participant-as-observer, the role declared. Whatit yields that nothing else can: the difference between what people say they do and what they do (interviews report ideals; participation records practice — the anthropologist's oldest finding: ask about rituals and get the theology; attend them and see who actually cooks, pays and decides); the tacit knowledge nobody articulates; the unrepeatable moments (the quarrel that explains the year). The problems and their management:reactivity (being observed changes behaviour — cured only by time: the village stops performing for you around month four); subjectivity and bias (the researcher's lenses — checked by reflexivity and triangulation); goingnative (identity absorbed — the balance's failure) and its opposite, detachment's blindness; access limits (gender, caste, age — the male fieldworker's limited access to women's worlds — the classic correction: team fieldwork, matched interviews).
