Frame: the Nile's gift — "Egypt is the gift of the Nile" (Herodotus); unification of Upper and Lower Egypt c. 3100 BC (Menes/Narmer); three millennia of continuity (Old, Middle, New Kingdoms) to Cleopatra's Rome-absorbed end (30 BC).
The Pyramid Age (= the Old Kingdom, c. 2686–2181 BC):
• Djoser's Step Pyramid at Saqqara (architect Imhotep — history's first named engineer) → the true pyramids of Giza: Khufu (Cheops), Khafre, Menkaure (c. 2560 BC), the Great Pyramid among the ancient world's wonders and still standing; pyramid = the ladder to the sky, kingship's theology in stone.
• Meaning: the pyramid's scale proves the machine that built it — surplus extraction, mobilised labour, and an administrative state directing it: monuments as the state's organogram.
Political and administrative system:
• The Pharaoh — god-king (Horus incarnate, son of Ra): theocracy and monarchy fused; his word law (justice = ma'at, the cosmic order the king upholds — Egypt's own natural-law idiom).
• The Vizier (the highest official — often "the eyes of the king") heading the bureaucracy; nomes (provinces) under nomarchs; scribes (the literate class — the state's memory), granaries and tax assessment (the Nilometer's flood-reading as fiscal policy); the army; and the priesthood of Amun-Ra rising to rival kings (the New Kingdom's temple economy). Socialclasses (the syllabus's trio, in order):aristocrats (royal family, nomarchs, high priests, viziers); intellectuals (scribes, physicians, engineers, astronomers — the scribe's career praised in the schools' "satire of the trades"); farmers and labourers (the mass, taxed in grain and labour-corvée — the pyramid's actual builders were organized work-gangs, not slaves only, as village archaeology shows). Legacies:hieroglyphs (deciphered via the Rosetta Stone, 1822 — Champollion); papyrus; the 365-day solar calendar; mummification (medicine's by-product); a legal tradition of deeds, courts and ordeals that pre-dated and influenced the Mediterranean world.
