2.2 Purpose and Principles of United Nations

Purposes (Article 1 — the four): (1) international peace and security (collective prevention and removal of threats; suppression of aggression); (2) friendly relations (self-determination's development, the equal-rights basis); (3) international cooperation (economic, social, cultural, humanitarian problems; human rights and freedoms without discrimination); (4) the harmonisingcentre (the states' actions aligned toward these common ends). Principles (Article 2 — theseven): (1) sovereign equality of members; (2) good-faith fulfilment of Charterobligations; (3) peaceful settlement of disputes; (4) non-use of force (against territorial integrity or political independence — the VCT's core, PIL-II, Semester 4); (5) assistance to theUN and non-assistance to states the UN acts against; (6) non-intervention in domestic jurisdiction (the Art 2(7) wall — with the enforcement exception); (7) membership's good faith in securing the non-members' cooperation so far as necessary for peace (the non-member clause). The purposes-and-principles pair is the Charter's constitutional core — the interpretive compass for every organ.
