Aristotle accepts that law should be the final authority, but for a different reason from Plato. In the Politics he argues that law is "reason unaffected by desire": a ruler who governs by decree is at the mercy of appetite, while law has the impersonality that good government needs. His second claim matters as much — law must itself be good and must be applied by good men, because no text can answer every case.
