Bertrand Russell's contribution to the study of reasoning is the insistence that language hides logical form. "The present King of France is bald" looks like a simple statement about a person; Russell showed that it is really three claims, one of which is false, and that its falsity follows from the analysis rather than from looking for the king. In law the same technique is daily work: a sentence in a statute must be rewritten into its components before you can say what it entails.
