5 Gandhi: non-violence

Gandhi's non-violence is not passivity. It is the deliberate refusal to cooperate with injustice while accepting the suffering that follows, on the argument that converting the opponent is more durable than defeating him. Satyagraha — truth-force — treats the opponent as capable of being persuaded. Its legal expression is civil disobedience with the willingness to accept the penalty, which is what distinguishes it from evasion.
