Contractual matters were dealt with in the Muluki Ain's chapters on transactions and debts; the Contract Act of 1968 (2025 BS) gave contract a separate statute; and the Contract Act 2058 (2000) is the present general law, with special statutes governing sale, agency, carriage and insurance. Its basic features are freedom of contract subject to law and public policy, the requirement of free consent, and the availability of damages and specific performance as remedies.
