5 The lawyer's caution

Technology changes the facts faster than the statute changes. The reliable way to answer an unfamiliar question is to ask which existing rule the new facts engage — property, contract, crime, evidence, privacy — and then to ask what the electronic medium changes about its application. That method survives the next technology; a list of offences does not.
