Jayasthiti Malla ordered the compilation of a legal digest — the Manav Nyaya Shastra ("the law of humanity/justice") also known as Nyaya Vikasini — prepared, the tradition says, with the help of learned brahmin jurists drawn from the dharmashastra corpus (Manu, Yajnavalkya, Narada, Brihaspati). It is the first legal codification in Nepali history — before it, the law was custom and royal discretion.
