6.1 Introduction to Research Report
The research report = the research’s public instrument — the findings’ formal communication to the reader (the supervisor, the examiner, the court, the funder, the profession). The report’s contract: the reader must be able to audit the study (from question to conclusion through the evidence’s chain — the methods’ transparency) and to verify the authorities (the citations’ completeness — 6.4). The report’s species: the thesis (the degree’s submission), the research paper (the journal’s currency), the project report (the funder’s deliverable), the case brief-and-memorandum (the practice’s daily report — Legal English’s terrain, Semesters 1–2), and the court’s own judgment (the report’s judicial cousin — Procedural Law-I’s reasoned-decision discipline).
6.2 Lay-out of Research Report
The standard skeleton (the exam’s sequence):
- The preliminary pages: the title page (the title, the researcher, the institution, the date); the declaration (the originality’s oath — 6.5’s face); the acknowledgements; the abstract (the 150–300-word whole — the question, method, findings, conclusion); the table of contents; the lists (the tables, the figures, the abbreviations).
- The chapters: (i) Introduction (the context, the problem’s statement, the objectives, the hypotheses, the scope-and-limitations, the methodology’s overview); (ii) Literature review (Unit 4.4’s map); (iii) Research methodology (the design, the tools, the sampling, the ethics’ protocol); (iv) Data presentation and analysis (the findings — the tables, the themes, the analysis’s storeys); (v) Findings, conclusions and recommendations (the answers to the objectives — the evidence-linked conclusions); (vi) Bibliography and annexes (the sources’ lists; the instrument, the consent-form, the permission letters).
- The physical craft: the numbering discipline (the chapters’ decimal system — 4.1, 4.1.2); the tables-and-figures’ titles-and-sources; the consistent fonts-and-margins (the university’s stylesheet).
