What is the Nepal Bar Council?
The Nepal Bar Council (नेपाल कानून व्यवसायी परिषद्) is an independent statutory body established under the Nepal Bar Council Act, 2050 (1993). Before its formation, examination and registration of legal practitioners was handled directly by the Supreme Court; this responsibility was transferred to a specialized, autonomous body. It is headquartered in Kupandole, Lalitpur.

- Conducting the advocate license examination for new law graduates
- Registering qualified legal practitioners and maintaining official records
- Monitoring lawyers’ compliance with the professional code of conduct
- Receiving and processing complaints against practitioners, referring them to the Disciplinary Committee

- Recommending experienced advocates for the “Senior Advocate” title
Structure
The Council represents the executive, judiciary, and legal profession. Its members include Senior Advocates/Advocates elected by legal practitioners across Nepal’s development regions, plus nominees from the Nepal Bar Association. Key internal bodies include:
- Examination Committee — conducts the advocate license exam
- Senior Advocate Recommendation Committee — reviews candidates for the Senior Advocate title
- An administrative unit led by a Secretary (registrar-level officer)
