Tribhuvan University’s Faculty of Law offers a 3-year Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) programme under the New Course curriculum (2076/077 B.S. / 2019-2020 A.D.). The full course consists of 22 subjects out of 39 papers on offer (16 compulsory + 23 optional, from which each student selects the required number), totalling 1600 full marks, 200,000 hours of instruction, and 13,680 periods across the three years.
Each year combines a fixed set of compulsory subjects with optional papers chosen from a wider pool. Below is a year-wise breakdown and summary.
1st Year LL.B. — Full Marks: 600
Compulsory subjects: Jurisprudence, Procedural Law, Public International Law, Constitutional Law, Law of Contract
Optional subjects (choose 2 of 8): Family Law, Media Law, Administrative Law, Taxation Law, International Trade Law, Law of Torts, Juvenile Justice, Fiscal Law
First year LL.B. lays the theoretical foundation of legal education. Students study Jurisprudence to understand the meaning, schools, and sources of law; Procedural Law covering civil and criminal court processes; Public International Law addressing the framework of international legal relations; Constitutional Law examining Nepal’s constitutional structure, fundamental rights, and separation of powers; and Law of Contract covering the principles of contractual obligations. Year 1 is designed to build the conceptual vocabulary and legal reasoning skills needed for the rest of the degree.
2nd Year LL.B. — Full Marks: 600
Compulsory subjects: Criminal Law, International Institutions and Human Rights, Property Law, Methods of Legal Research and Writing, Moot Court (Pre-Trial Preparations and Participation in Trial), Evidence Law
Optional subjects (choose 2 of 8): Labour Law, Election Law, International Air and Space Law, Environmental Law, Refugee Law, Criminology and Penology, Gender and Inclusive Justice, Law of Insurance
Second year marks a shift toward applied legal training. Compulsory subjects deepen the substantive law base from Year 1 with Criminal Law and Evidence Law. What sets this year apart is the introduction of two dedicated practical-skills courses — Methods of Legal Research and Writing, and Moot Court — where students prepare case files, argue before mock courts, and practice client-interviewing techniques. Year 2 is where students begin practicing law, not just learning about it.
3rd Year LL.B. — Full Marks: 400
Compulsory subjects: Comparative Law and Nepalese Legal System, Interpretation of Statutes, Professional Ethics and Lawyering Skills, Company Law, Seminar
Optional subjects (choose 2 of 7): Law of the Sea and International Rivers, Law of Banking and Negotiable Instruments, Private International Law, Intellectual Property Law, Population Law, Victimology, Cyber Law
Third and final year prepares students for legal practice and specialization. Professional Ethics and Lawyering Skills addresses the standards and conduct expected of practicing lawyers, while the Seminar requires independent research work. Optional subjects lean toward specialized and commercial practice areas — Banking and Negotiable Instruments, Intellectual Property Law, and Cyber Law. Year 3 closes the degree by connecting the theory of Years 1-2 to the ethical and procedural realities of legal practice in Nepal.
